Panychida Interview (In English)

Well, Panychida is really good band from the muscial point of view, otherwise it never will up appear in my zine. But it's a kind of bands which I name for myself the "mundane paganism". This is especially noticeble in comparison with Darken interview I made earlier. It's boring for me to explaint the difference between modern "neo-paganism" role-playing and really understanding and studying of folks generation memory and force of imaginary, leading to metaphysical feelings and things. And I think that's not needed here really. Anyway, I hope the fans of Panychida will take much interesting things from this interview. Enjoy!
p.s.: I'm not atheist)))

1.Hi! Present yourself and the band for the readers and tell about the history of Panychida.

Sinneral: Hi, everyone! My nickname is Sinneral (personal name is not important here, haha). I am a guitarist of band Panychida. At the beginning, in year 2004, the band was just a “two-men project”. Two men – myself and the former singer G.H.M. We made few shitty home records, which were well appreciated by our friends and other listeners. After receiving positive feedback, we changed our minds and tried to create regular band. During 2005, Honza (guitar) and Talic (bass) joined the band and we were ready to strike the stages. Using a poor-sounded drum machine and midi-sampled bagpipes we went through the fire, which every band has to go. Lot of concerts, gaining experience, a demo record…funny times, but still beautiful in a kind of way J. In 2006 we have decided to go to studio (HELLSOUND) to our friend Honza Kapák. He is also very skilled drummer and offered his artillery to us, later he joined the band as a full member! First album “Paganized” was released in 2007 by German label Folter Records. Gigs and gigs and gigs. 2010, G.H.M. decided to leave the band and Vlčák comes in the line-up as a single frontman. Same year, the 2nd album “Moon, Forest, Blinding Snow” was recorded in Hellsound and released by Folter Records again. To make this story shorter and not too boring – we had several swaps on the drummer post. Honza Kapák left the band twice. Once replaced by Honza Richter and finally by Karel Švejnoha, which remains with us till nowadays. In 2011, we have released an EP and in 2013 the 3rd album “Grief for an Idol”. Also recorded in Hellsound studio, released by Curse Rec. (Austria), Paragon Rec. (USA) and Werewolf Prods (CZ). These weeks, we are preparing to go to studio again to record our 4th album. We have played lots of gigs, festivals. To name the best and biggest – 2 performances at Brutal Assault (2007 and 2014). Several tours round Europe are behind us and some others are ahead. This band, this music is our life. J

2.Why did you chose such name? If I’m correct it’s called liturgy in Orthodox church tradition. How it can be connected with paganism? Is your band pagan?

Sinneral: You are correct, in Orthodox church, this word is used for a kind of a “burial”, e.g. in Russia, Bulgary, etc. But for example in Czech Republic, the word is not used anymore. Almost nobody here knows it. The origin of the word reaches ancient times, pagan times, a night ritual, which has nothing in common with any kind of Christianity. Orthodox church was not so strict and took over this word…”legalized” it. Catholic church was not so tolerant, that’s why here, in Czech Republic, or any other „Catholic“ country, the word is unknown, dead. Generally the word means „a commemoriation“.

If our band is pagan? I will explain in next answer.

3.What do you put into the term paganism? Your relation to the other religions, especially organized and monotheistic.

Sinneral: It is very important to recognize the difference between the old paganism (old times, Slavics, Vikings, etc.) and the new wave of the neo-paganism. Lot of people does not see the difference. They try to act the old way of life, way of worshipping. But that is stupid and awkward. We are living NOW. We cannot run the time backwards.

All members of Panychida band are atheists. We are interested in history, in understanding our forefathers’ deeds and lives. We like fantasy topics. Sometimes we mix the lyric with true historical facts and fiction. Sometimes we sing about totally-non-pagan-things. But generally- our music can be considered as a kind of „pagan/black metal“. This genre specification is very shortsighted, but it is also silly to create new and new long genre specifications. The best way how to insist, what kind of music Panychida plays, is to listen to it J.

Our relation to other religions is, as I said, disapproving. We are atheists, singing about different topics, including religion. Without our own faith. Some of us (including myself) consider any religion as a human mind plague.

4.It’s not usual business, when bands releasing videos between demo releases, and especially split videos! Tell about your relation to such things.

Honza: We did not release officially any videos until now, when we unleashed our first video made of live shoots from our own festival Phanoms of Pilsen. So I have actually no idea what videos are you talking about ;-) (I meant Metal Swamp Video Split - red.)

5.Maybe I know the reason, that band from Czech Republic really like to watch and make videos, I think you know what I mean, Trollech, Master’s Hammer, Maniac Butcher. I got nothing really against that, but it’s really funny. I know, that your guitarist earlier took part in Stíny Plamenů, REALLY strangest project from Lord Morbivod, singing about sewers! Please describe your relation about such things.

Honza: No specific relation to this. Playing with Stíny Plamenů was a help out to my friend Lord Morbivod, I spent with them few years and recorded one album. That´s it. It´s his way and I was just a musician. I left the band also because I felt not too attracted to such topics. Actually It is only Morbivod´s fascination and nobody else in the band no matter if in the past days or today is attracted to such topics.

6.Also, I know you got more serious bands in Czech, I mean Inferno, Cult Of Fire and Sezarbil, Silva Nigra, Zrec and so on. Your relation to them.

Honza: We know all of them, but there is not much to say … we are good friends with Inferno with who we did a European tour last year. From the other, we know the guys but that´s all. Anyway we respect them all, but our ways are different.

7.What bands from worldwide Slavonic scene you like most of all and what bands do you really now from all Slavonic countries and interested in?

Honza: Our music is fantasy, it´s fun, it´s partially based on history or philosophy and anthropology as we are (well I am) graduated anthropologists, but most of all, it is METAL. We are living humans, not worshipers. We do this because of the music. We tell stories. We don´t care about any Slavic scene, Nordic scene and such bullshits. It´s about music, taking care of mentioned things brings problems. We do this for fun, not for problems. There is only one scene and that´s metal. The rest is bullshit for assholes.

8.What do you think about the histories of Slavonic conflicts, for example Yugoslavian war and Ukrainian war now? I think sometime that Slavonic folks are wild tribes deeply in their hearts, which like to destroy each other. I know also, that Československo was occupied by soviet army in 1968 and in the beginning of 90s was a little conflict about dividing of country into the two parts.

Honza: Politics is not of our interest, not the past one, nor the current one. If we are interested in anything connected with politics, it´s history and its critic reflection of it. But we are not in the position, nor in the mood to comment anything. Commenting these things brings problems as people are too stupid to respect any other opinion. And we are not here for problems. And if we have any private opinion about these things (and we have), it is a private matter and not to be mentioned in relation with the band. As a band we don´t give a shit. We love Serbia … if this might be an answer to some of your question … the rest is up to you! Good luck. ;-)

9.Returning to your band. Do you got some conceptions in albums? I had found a some allusions to it, but I can remember now all your lyrics clearly.

Honza: No there is no conception album so far. May be some of the songs are interconnected, but not as a whole album. But we are working on something more solid, that will be brought up to the light of the world later, when we are ready … we wannna make it worthy. So far there is no conception … but the next two things will bear some kind of concept … not conception in general.

10.Also, you got some lyrics written in Glagolic alphabet. Maybe I’m right that I see some connection with Cyrillic alphabet, right? Tell more about this subject.

Honza: That´s our bass player interest in linguistic … and old legends … it is an interest, hobby … There is nothing more to be said about this. These lyrics tell stories of old tribes and people in their old language in which it was written ..

11.Tell about the meaning of the name “Grief for an Idol” and lyric construction of an album and connection between lyrical and musical content and images on the cover art. What did you wanted to put down in it?

Honza: We wanted to say, that the modern neo-pagan movements have nothing to do with the original worshipping. The original is dead and so it should be. The “neo” is sometimes ridiculous and amusing. That´s why the old idol on the cover works for the ancient worshipper but not for the modern one.

12.Next – who is the main composer of the band and how do you write music each time, when you sit down to make a riffs for the future release? Is this a one man, or a couple of people work together and help each other for creating of needed mood and atmosphere?

Honza: Most of the music is done by me and Sinneral … but it differs … some of the songs are mine completely, some of them are his … some done together … lyrics is divided between few other people… most of it is done by me. But the whole outcome is a result of cooperation of alll of us, which I think is quite natural.

13.Do you use keyboards or you prefer native instruments? Because I hadn’t seen any keyboardists in your line-up, but I hear the different sound of folk instruments here and there. Are they synthetic or natural?

Honza: We use samples … It´s effective when travelling … in the studio we use original instruments if it is possible.

14.Tell about the Czech folk instrument and native music traditions came from Middle Ages and before it. Do you interested in finding, learning to play or something like that about old native instruments? Are you interested in reconstructions?

Honza: No. Not regarding this. Our music is a metal music! Nothing more, nothing less.

15.Do you visit some sacred places for Slavs in Czech or outside of the country? What you can say about countryside and leaving a cities for nature from time to time?

Honza: Well, do we do like nature, though even the nature of Europe is human influenced and thus cultural. No wilderness anymore in Europe. Bu nature can still be huge inspiration and it really does to us. I take lots of inspiration from my trips to national parks … it will bring its fruit in the future. Leaving city is nice, but for playing in a band one needs a city. So the balance between it is very important.

16.Tell about the folklore, mythology and gods of your Slavonic ancestors, which dwelled in Czech long time ago, before the appearing of this state itself?

Honza: Read a book about it. That´s better. We are not scholars to teach you and we doubt the scholars would teach you properly. That´s how the neo-pagan movements are being created. Read and dream! That´s the way!

17.Do you interested in studying of mythology of the other Slavonic countries and their people and can you tell something about your experiences, if you have some?

Honza: We have some, but this space is not big enough for this.  We do read, we do respect, we do appreciate. But we are not scholars, nor politics. With people too much involved in “old times” we don´t have the best experience. But in general history and religion is a part of our interest, it teaches you. Getting to know your history and environment brings you to another level. If you know nothing, you stay too primitive.

18.Some members of your band played also in Avenger, I know this really good band, despite it differs so much from Panychida. Please tell about it and about other projects of yours.

Honza: It is a history now with Avenger as Sinneral recently left the band. But he joined another, may be even more promising band called MALLLEPHYR. Check them out. They are just about to record their first album. Very promising band in the vein of Behemoth/Vader and meay be some other blackened death metal. But these guys can also bring something new.
I play in a more doom metal outfit called ET MORIEMUR, these are regular bands, but not that active as we wanna be with PANYCHIDA. Our drummer plays drums for many other bands from around the Pilsen region … also for already mentioned STINY PLAMENU of for TROLLECH and 1000 BOMBS. Each of the band is different varying from black metal to thrash metal.

19.Tell about other projects where you took part and about your future plans!

Honza: I have already mentioned most pf the other projects. For the future of PANYCHIDA I can only say, that we are entering studio next weekend to start recording our 4th full length, which will be probably slightly different from the latest one. It will be called “Haereticalia”. Join our facebook profile to be up to date ;-) We also plan one mostly German tour with our brothers from Serbian INFEST – we did one last year and we are like brothers, so we wanna do this again and we are very much looking forward to this. Also around Christmas there will be few gigs with our friends from Austrian BIFRÖST. That´s it for now. And most probably we will release our latest album on cassette, it will go out with the planned album as a bonus ;-)

20.Some last words for the readers of the House of the Whipcord Zine!

Honza: Thanks for the time you took to get all these questions together. We are also very sorry our answers took that much time. But there is still lots of things around – also to some of the questions we were not really sure how to answer and who of us should do it. :-D Thank you very much. Support the music, not the bullshits around. ;-)
